I was awarded the United Way Worldwide Back-to-School grant for my literacy project that was targeted to children in kindergarten through 3rd grade. With the assistance of Mission: Graduate staff, I researched different types of literacy games that included learning first words of the alphabet, as well as creating stories with sentences, rhyming, and colors. The booklet also included information and resources for parents about Mission: Graduate’s “Everyday Matters”attendance awareness campaign. Mission: Graduate and Albuquerque Reads helped coordinate with Albuquerque Public Schools for a 3-day event promoting the ‘Literacy-On-the-Go’ booklet with groups of tutors and kindergarten students from area schools to participate in playing literacy games from the booklet. The students were instructed by their tutors to write their name in the booklet and take it home to share with their families.
